Robert Rauschenberg died a few days ago at the age of 82.

The name may not mean much to you...you might not even be sure how to pronounce it...but there's a lot to learn from his life.

Like a lot of young people of his time, he traveled to New York City to make his career as a painter. Not a house painter, but a painter of canvasses.

A lot of people would focus on his wealth and success, but I prefer to focus on the realities of how he got there.

Rauschenberg wasn't always successful.

There were times when he had to decide between buying paints and canvases and buying food.

One morning, early in his career, he woke up with an urge to create something, but the problem was he had no canvas to paint on and only a little bit of paint.

So what did he do?

He improvised.

He took the quilt off his bed, gathered up what little paint he had, found some toothpaste and fingernail polish and made something with it.

It may not sound like much, but today it hangs in the Museum of Modern Art and if you owned it you and your heirs would never have to work another day in your lives.
